Black carbon is a short-term climate forcing pollutant that results from the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels. Its impact on climate is second only to CO2. Black carbon settles on ice and snow in the Arctic, causing more heat absorption from the sun, accelerating melting and the release of methane from the permafrost.

Charcoal is produced through the carbonisation of wood in low oxygen earthen mounds, requiring 10 tons of wood to produce 1 ton of charcoal- the approximate annual consumption of a single household. Charcoal-based deforestation averages 2 million ha. per year in Africa (200x the size of Manhattan). This destruction is only increasing with urbanization.
