KOKO Networks has today commenced the rollout of its Greater Mombasa clean fuel Network.
Building on strong traction in Nairobi, where over 250,000 households cook with KOKO Fuel, today marks an important step for KOKO in bringing a modern and affordable clean cooking fuel solution to families across Kenya.
The East African coastal forest runs along the Tanzanian and Kenyan coast, from Somalia in the north to Mozambique in the south. This region constitutes one of the 35 global biodiversity hotspots, comprising some of the highest diversity of endemic plant and animal species. The coastal forest is being rapidly destroyed to meet rising charcoal demand from households in the fast-growing cities, and Mombasa is one of the major demand centres.
Replacing charcoal demand with clean KOKO Fuel is one of the very few tangible and scalable ways to protect these fragile forests and the critical ecosystem services they provide.
KOKO's Greater Mombasa Network will cover the greater metropolitan region, from Kilifi in the north to Ukunda / Diani in the south, involving 300 ‘KOKO Point’ Smart Fuel ATMs installed inside mini-mart KOKO Agent shops on a rolling basis in the coming weeks, enabling convenient access to clean household energy for neighbouring communities.
In preparation for the launch, KOKO hired and trained an additional 100 team members in the Mombasa region, primarily in Sales & Marketing, Customer Care, Agent Management and Network Operations. Team KOKO is now over 1,000-strong across our Kenyan and Indian operating companies.
