Today KOKO celebrates another milestone, with 200,000 household subscribers in Nairobi using our clean fuel platform.
With the cost of charcoal at record highs due to increasing deforestation, Kenyan households have been calling out for an affordable and safe modern solution. KOKO is providing this, with customers accessing the next generation KOKO Cooker at less than half the price of competing modern solutions.
KOKO Fuel is ultra-low-carbon renewable bioethanol that is available from a dense Network of KOKO Fuel ATMs inside local shops a short walk from home. Customers can purchase fuel in the small daily quantities that are often preferred in the informal sector. Learn more about how our solution works in this recent BBC podcast.
In many parts of Nairobi, KOKO is now the cooking solution of choice; in one neighbourhood (called Kariokor), for example, 45% of households are cooking with KOKO. With ever-growing demand, and expansion plans across Kenya and to new countries, KOKO is further investing in the expansion of its hardware manufacturing facilities.
KOKO's growth helps underpin the recently launched Kenyan Ethanol Cooking Fuel Industry Masterplan, which was co-developed with the Ministries of Industrialisation, Agriculture, Energy and Environment with funding from the International Climate Initiative. The Government of Kenya recently passed one recommendation of the Masterplan, exempting ethanol cooking fuel from VAT in the 2021/22 Finance Act, in order to enable lower consumer prices and accelerate the switch from deforestation-based charcoal.
KOKO's mission is to imagine and deliver technology that transforms life in the world's fastest growing cities. We are doing this first with our clean fuel platform that delivers major outcomes for households, public health, air quality and tropical forest protection.
